How do I book a surf lesson with you guys?

Use this booking form.

I'm under 18, am I allowed to participate in your surf lessons?

We do not have an age limit to participate in our surf activities, the only rule is that you have to be able to swim. If you are under 18 years of age we need your parents' consent for you to participate. Also, you need help from someone with access to a car to be able to transport yourself to and from the Surf Farm as well as going out around the island to find spots to surf. The wetsuits that we use are spring and summer wetsuits (4/3 mm) in sizes S-XL so depending on on your age and body size we might not have wetsuits in your size.

Do you also do wind surfing and kite surfing at Bornholm Surf Farm?

No, we only practice (wave) surfing and SUP (Stand Up Paddle Board).

How do I go about renting surf equipment?

Use this booking form to arrange for a pick-up. Note that unless you are renting one of our shorter boards you will most likely have to have roof racks on your car and straps to be able to transport the gear with you.

Can I bring the equipment on a bike or the bus?

No, you are going to need a car. Mostly because the wind usually has to exceed 12 m/s for there to be any waves and biking with a board in those condition are quite hard. From others who have tried it, we have heard that they do not accept surf boards on the local busses.

Can I walk down to the ocean and surf right in front of the Surf Farm?

No, that is not advisable because chances are there are no waves at that exact spot. You need to be able to transport yourself and the equipment around the island to seek out a spot that works on the current forecast.

Surfing on Bornholm

When is the best season to go surfing on Bornholm?

In general the best waves come in the spring, autumn and winter. You can score during summer as well, but usually we are talking longboard standard waves.

I’m thinking about going to Bornholm in [enter voluntary month], how is the surf at that time?

The Baltic Sea is a very small ocean. This means that there are no frequent spots or seasons that always work. A general rule is that the wind has to blow > 12 m/s for there to be waves. Bornholm works on all wind directions.

Where should I go online to check the forecast for potential surf on Bornholm?

We use the Danish Metrological Instituts website DMI.dk.

Where is it best to surf on Bornholm?

We get a lot of questions about specific spots to surf on Bornholm. Here is what we can tell you; Since Bornholm is an island you can basically surf 360 degrees around it. But what works when, is completely dependent on the forecast. There are no spots that always works. Usually the wind has to exceed 12 m/s for there to be any waves at all. Down in the south/south-east you have long sandbeaches, perfect for beginners and longboarders. Along the Eastern, Northern and going over to the Western coast, there are reefs, cliffs and stone sea bottoms which produces more powerfull and high performance waves. When you rent gear at the Surf Farm we always try to give you an idea of where to go and search for waves based on the current forecast. But when it comes to surfing you have put in the effort of finding a spot that works yourself. Think of it like mushroom picking - we can direct you to a place that has potentioal, the rest is up to you.

Can I tag along with you guys when you're going surfing next time?

While on the island, you are always welcome to get in contact with us. If Dennie is planning to head out, you might be able to share some waves together.

How does a compost toilet work?

Our compost toilet looks quite like a "normal" toilet. The seat is comfortable to sit on and a built-in fan makes sure you are not bothered by any inconvenient smell. Although, instead of flushing the waste down a drain, it is gathered in large bins where it compostes for approx. 2 years. After that it has turned to dry dirt and is reused as fertilization for plants and trees. The only big differences for the user is that both genders have to sit down and pee for the seperation process, and thus the composting, to work.

How does one shower at the Surf Farm?

There is no access to a "normal" warm-water shower at the Surf Farm. Instead visitors get to do a bit of time-travelling when taking their morning baths. This means you bring heated water in a bucket into a private washing room where you place yourself in a zinc bathtub. Then you use a scoop to wash and rinse. There is a drain in the bottom of the bathrube so all the spill water expires by itself.

What kind of payment do you guys accept?

Payment is always to be made in cash at check-in. We do not accept credit cards or MobilePay. The closest ATM can be found on the right side about 50 meters down the hill street leeding down the harbour in Gudhjem. ATMs can also be found in Rønne and in all of the villages around the island.

Bornholm Surf Farm was created with a clear vision behind it. The philosophy behind the Surf Farm is based on a simple way of living, in close interaction with nature, and with the possibility of disconnecting from technological distractions and a high tempo city lifestyle. This concept influences the interior of the hostel in all aspects. Our wish is that each and every one of our guests get a feeling of individual experience, going temporarily “off the grid” and hopefully getting inspired to adapt some of our values and concepts back into their everyday lifestyle. An ecological lifestyle and sustainable awareness is one of the cornerstones at Bornholm Surf Farm.

Am I allowed to bring my dog/cat or other animal when staying at the hostel?

Unfortuantely it is not allowed to bring any animals when staying at the Surf Farm. The reason for this is that we have a lot of animals living at and around the Surf Farm. So for their safety, and for the conviniouce of other guests, we have a non-acceptant policy against bringing other animals to the Farm.

How does the accommodation work on the Surf Farm?

The hostel has two private cabins. You can either rent the small cabin, or the large cabin, or you can rent the entire hostel (both cabins).

The smaller cabin houses two double-sized bunkbeds (120 cm wide) and two single-sized bunkbeds (80 cm wide) and is appropriate for companies up to six people. The larger cabin houses eight single-sized bunkbeds (100 cm wide) and welcomes a maximum of eight guests.

In a separate building all guests have access to a common room that houses a kitchen area and a lounge area with sofas, a reading corner and a pool table. The kitchen has a small fridge, a stove and some basic cooking tools. It’s adequate for preparing breakfast and simpler meals for lunch and dinner.
